The Great Dublin Floods of 2011 at Isaacs Hostel

What a week we have had in Isaacs Hostel! Our basement flooded in the Great Dublin Floods of 2011. (Okay, okay, I made that name up. It was some epic flooding all over Dublin city, suburbs and parts of Ireland though)

We toiled through the night pumping water out of the basement and the crew here in Isaacs Hostel worked all day Tuesday cleaning up the mess. By Tuesday evening we were back in business, YAY! We were very happy with ourselves indeed; it seemed we were in the clear.

Unfortunately, one of our water pumps had malfunctioned and the knock-on effect of this was that a hot water pump gave up on us. When we discovered this it took some time to find a replacement. We found one and once again we were happy. A new pump was installed... we are good to go right?
Wrong, oh so wrong.

While trying to establish what the issue was with the pump, our boss (PHEW. It wasn't me) stood on the other pump and broke it in half. Bah! Back to the suppliers to source a new pump..... get the plumber out of bed once again....get the new pump from the manufacturers....have another ridiculously strong cup of coffee so that I stay awake..... get the new pump installed. And finally the job was done and we were back in business.

At each stage we were told that the pump was fixed and we'd tell all of you guys and then the bad news would filter through once again.

We're really sorry about any problems you had over the last week whilst staying with us. I promise that we were beavering away in the depths of the building fixing, then standing on and breaking and fixing the pumps again!

It's not a regular occurence and we are confident that the pumps won't malfunction again. And the boss is no longer allowed in the general basement area...just in case :)

Best week in Dublin City!

Bring your drinking boots with you if you are visiting Dublin this weekend, you have picked a great week to sample a tipple or two in Ireland's capital.

First up is Arthur's Day which is happening on Thursday 22nd September. It's a night of music and celebrating Ireland's most famous export. Pretty much all of the pubs in Dublin will be packed with people and there are sold out gigs on in venues all over the city. Start your night in the Backpacker's Beer Garden in Isaacs Hostel where pints of stout are just €2.50 and then head up to Dame Court for a pint outside The Stags Head and The Dame Tavern (my favorite place to celebrate Arthur's Day. Trust me, it rocks!)

So, when you have wiped the stout foam from your lips it's time to head to Oktoberfest on Friday 23rd September. Just a couple of minute walk (or stumble on your way home!) from Isaacs Hostel and Jacobs Inn, Oktoberfest is the celebration of all things German with German food, German music and of course litres and litres of German beer on offer. This is one of the best festivals of the year in my opinion. Good, clean, tipsy fun!
Oktoberfest runs from 22nd September to 09th October on George's Dock, Dublin Docklands in
the IFSC.

If you fancy a break from boozin' you can visit any museums, galleries, studios, historical buildings and all things cultural in Dublin on Friday for free as part of Dublin's Culture Night. Hundreds of Dublin's most famous landmarks are open to the public and there are free tours all over the city. For more information check out the website here.

Saturday is the hostel party of the year, the Backpacker's Ball. Run by the ten best hostels in Dublin the Backpacker's Ball is in The Village on the 24th September from 8.30pm 'til very, very late. There is a popcorn party, live music, DJ's, acrobats, drinks promotions, competitions, a giant pillow fight and much, much more. Entrance is by guest list only, if you are with us for the weekend just pop your name down at reception in Isaacs Hostel or Jacobs Inn.

Sunday...well, there are sausage or rasher sambo's in the deli and the Backpacker's Beer Garden opens in the evening for those who need a curer. You WILL be tired on Monday morning, guaranteed!

Free, weird and wonderful Dublin

Fancy doing something a little different, secret and something that most backpackers won’t have seen in Dublin? Here are three weird, wonderful and most importantly FREE places to visit on your trip to Dublin’s fair city.

1. The Hand
The hand is a sculpture located on Marlborough Street in the gardens of the Department of Education and Science just minutes from Jacobs Inn and Isaacs Hostel. Great photo op and free to access between 9 am – 5pm.
(Surprisingly The Hand doesn’t have a nickname unlike the ‘The Flue with the View’,’ The poker near Croker’, ‘The Hags with the Bags’ ...)

2. The Tenements of Dublin
Dublin was a very different place at the beginning of the 19th Century, a place where abject poverty, poor housing conditions and disease permeated the lives of thousands.
The city was too densely populated for the amount of housing available and often as many as 100 people would live in an eight roomed building in what was known as the Tenements. (Records show that an incredible 835 people lived between 15 houses on Henrietta Street!)

The Iveagh Trust Museum Flat is a three roomed Dublin tenement in near original condition which is open to the public on Saturdays between 10am and 1pm.

If you don’t manage to get to the museum flat you can view the outside of the old tenements in their original condition at Henrietta Street which is on the same side of the city as Isaacs Hostel and Jacobs Inn close to the Four Courts. Ask at reception for directions. Totally free and completely worth a visit.

3. The Mummies of St Michan’s Church, Church Street, Dublin 7.
Dating from 1685, it is believed that George F. Handel played the organ in St Michan’s when he was composing The Messiah. But the really interesting part of the church happens in the vaults below the church. Descend the steep stone staircase into a limestone tunnel filled with ancient coffins, some of which appear to be bursting at the seams. At the very back are three open caskets exposing perfectly preserved, leathery skinned corpses- The nun, the Crusader and the thief. If you are feeling particularly brave they say that lightly touching the finger of the Crusader will bring great fortune.

It’s a creepy, dusty and surprisingly peaceful place. Not a tour for the faint hearted!

Oh for the love of Spuds in Ireland!

It’s National Potato Day in Ireland today so to celebrate the humble spud here’s a hostel kitchen friendly but tasty potato recipe.

The kitchens in Isaacs Hostel Dublin and Jacobs Inn Dublin are fully equipped but I still thought I’d go with a nice easy recipe!

Enjoy :)

Potato Latkes

1 potato, shredded or grated
1 medium onion, peeled
1 egg, beaten
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 tablespoon all-purpose flour
Vegetable oil, for frying

Directions

1. Heat a good glug of oil in a large pan over medium to medium high heat. To test the oil, add a piece of bread to the pan. It should turn golden brown in about ten seconds. Adjust heat, as necessary.

2. Grate the potatoes into a large bowl.

3. Finely dice the onion and add to the bowl.

4. Then add the egg.

5. Add salt and baking powder, then sprinkle in the flour and mix

6. Drop mixture into oil in small mounds, press down gently with spatula to form patties. Fry in batches so that each pattie is 1-inch apart until golden, about 3 minutes on each side.

7. Drain latkes on paper towels and enjoy!

Heading to The O2 or Croke Park for a gig?

You've bought the tickets already so we know that you've spent a fortune but what do you do for a bed for the night?

We've got it licked for ya! Isaacs Hostel and Jacobs Inn are THE closest hostels to The O2 and Croker. Both are within easy walking distance and beds are priced from €12.50 in a dorm with private rooms from €42 including breakfast. Bargain!

To make things even cheaper you can avail of the Isaacs BBQ before the gig - just €5 for a burger and a beer. If you fancy eating on the move there are always plenty of hotdog and burger vans lining the walk to both venues. You can grab a Hotdog or burger for €5 from one of these.

When you come back from the gig you can hit the Backpackers Beer Garden at Isaacs Hostel serving pints for just €2.50 into the wee hours.

So make the most of your hard earned cash and stay with Isaacs Hostel and Jacobs Inn after the gig.

Why would you sleep with anyone else? :)

Directions to The O2 Dublin:
You have two options. It is a lovely ten minute stroll along the banks of the River Liffey through the Dublin Docklands or you can hop on a Luas Tram right beside Isaacs and Jacobs and be at the DOOR of the O2 in literally 2 minutes.

Directions to Croke Park Dublin:
Head straight up Gardiner Street to Mountjoy Square and turn right. You will see Croke Park Straight ahead of you. Just continue straight and follow the crowds. This is a 15 minute walk but you won't feel the time pass as the buzz on the walk to Croker is always electric both for Gaelic matches and gigs.

Poor old Dublin has a bit of a bad rep for being expensive. We can proudly reveal that if you have just a few Euro burning a hole in your pocket there are ways to do some serious shopping at discount prices. There are hidden shopping gems all over the city where you can get your hands on some top notch gear for less money than you would expect.

A super nice way of saying second hand but if you have a keen eye for fashion, art and bric-a–brac you can bag yourself a bargain in Dublin. I’ve listed some of the coolest places outside of the high street to get your shopping on in the city.

Dublin Flea Market
Held on the last Sunday of every month in Newmarket, off Cork Street the Dublin Flea Market is
a bizarre bazaar of vintage clothing and bric-a-brac.

Merrion Square Art
Every Saturday the railings around Merrion Square are filled with the most beautiful, diverse and sometimes weird ‘n wonderful art by artists all over the city. There are pieces to suit every pocket so you can grab yourself an arty memento of Dublin. Go for a wander around the park after you have had your fill of art.

Toejam Car boot Sale
This funky car boot sale is located in the car park of the Bernard Shaw Pub in Portobello. These sales go on every six weeks or so at the moment and the next one is on Saturday October 23rd. The car park is filled with vintage clothes, computers, music, bikes, cup cakes, sushi, Buckfast* Ice Cream, Big Blue Bus double Decker pizzas, crepes and much more. The market runs until 7pm with the after party in the Bernard Shaw pub ‘til 1am.
*Buckfast or Bucky is a potent tonic wine brewed by monks and drunk by punks. Buckfast ice cream is a more palatable way of tasting it!

Swapshop
Head to Crow Street in Temple Bar to Dublin’s only fashion exchange where you can upgrade your wardrobe. Bring along the clothes that you are finished with and once they are clean and in good condition you can swap them for new items. There is a service charge for swaps but you will save €€€€’s.

Moore Street Market
The Moore Street fruit, vegetable, fish and flower market is as Dublin as you get. Filled with fresh produce and lively locals it is as much a cultural experience as a market. Don’t expect anything quaint, this is noisy and bustling.

Point Village Market
This new market based beside The O2 runs every Saturday and Sunday. Live bands and DJ’s keep you entertained as you have a nosey around the stalls. As well as an eclectic collection of food stalls there is a farmers market and plenty of original art, photography, clothing and craft stalls. There are events and pop up markets throughout the year. (Check out the Halloween pop up market for apple bobbing and pumpkin carving workshops for a really fun, cheap day out to compliment your shopping!)

Cheapest beer in Dublin

At Isaacs Hostel we pride ourselves in doing things First - We were the First Independent hostel in Dublin (possibly even Ireland)celebrating our 25th Birthday this year. We were First hostel to be computerised, First hostel to provide a sauna, internet access etc.... the list goes on and on but now we have another fantastic FIRST - perhaps the best FIRST ever - we are the first hostel in Dublin to have a Beer Garden AND WE HAVE THE CHEAPEST PINT IN THE WHOLE OF IRELAND.

Just to put things into perspective for you, our dear readers. A Pint is 0.568 261 25 litre - just in case you didn't know! The average price of a pint of beer is €4.50 (and the price depends on where you are drinking - the posh places and the tourist places charge more!). Bumper to Bumper disco is back

The bumper to bumper disco Headphone disco is back.

The headphone disco is presented by Dublin Dance Festival in association with Temple Bar Cultural Trust and Phantom 105.2 with the station’s Jim Carroll and Michelle Doherty on the decks spinning all the best tracks, from the latest indie floor fillers to classic tunes from the 80s and 90s.

The headphone disco will start at 9 pm with gates opening at 8.30 pm. All you have to do is bring your headphone and have your radio tuned to 105.2 FM.

Tickets to this event are free but must be picked up from the Dublin Dance Festival Box office on 12 East Essex Street.

Who Was Saint Patrick?

Even though Saint Patrick the patron saint of Ireland and one of the most celebrated religious figures around the world, the factual information about his life and times is quite vague. Most information about St. Patrick has been twisted, embellished, or simply made up over centuries by storytellers, causing much ambiguity about the real life of St. Patrick. However, there are a some elements of his story about which most scholars accept to be true.

Saint Patrick is traditionally thought to have lived "between 432-461 A.D., but more recent scholarship moves the dates up a bit." At the age of sixteen he was kidnapped from his native land of the Roman British Isles by a band pirates, and sold into slavery in Ireland. Saint Patrick worked as a shepherd and turned to religion for solace. After six years of slavery he escaped to the Irish coast and fled home to Britain.

While back in his homeland, Patrick decided to become a priest and then decided to return to Ireland after dreaming that the voices of the Irish people were calling him to convert them to Christianity.

After studying and preparing for several years, Patrick traveled back to Ireland as a Christian missionary. Although there were already some Christians living in Ireland, St. Patrick was able to bring upon a massive religious shift to Christianity by converting people of power. He is credited with converting the nobles; who set an example which the people followed."

But Patrick's desire to spread of Christianity was not met without mighty opposition. "Patrick ran into trouble with the local pagan priesthood, the druids: and there are many stories about his arguments with them as well as his survival of plots against them." He laid the groundwork for the establishment of hundreds of monasteries and churches that eventually popped up across the Irish country to promote Christianity.

Saint Patrick is also credited with bringing written word to Ireland through the promotion of the study of legal texts and the Bible. Previous to Patrick, storytelling and history were reliant on memory and orally passing down stories.

Patrick's mission in Ireland is said to have lasted for thirty years. It is believe he died in the 5th century on March 17, which is the day St. Patrick's Day is commemorated each year.

The Monster Ball will be the first chance for fans to hear live renditions of new songs from her revamped album, The Fame Monster, due for release on 20th November.

The Russian Festival 15th - 21st February an event showcasing Russian art, folk crafts, food, storytelling and music.
The Russian Cultural Festival will include photographic exhibitions in Civic Offices, Wood Quay and Light House Cinema, Smithfield. There will be lunchtime lectures on Russian topics at Council Chamber, City Hall. Music events will take place throughout the week, including DIT School of Music concert in support of the charity “To Russia with Love” in The Pepper Canister Church and performances of Russia’s Nadejda Babkina in the Button Factory Temple Bar. Pancake Day, Sunday 21st of February will see various activities for all the family taking place in Meeting House Square, Temple Bar including music performances, children’s activities including face painting, Russian storytelling, and food stalls to give a taste of Russia.

Its official Isaacs Hostel & Jacobs Inn in connection with the DBH Hostels (Dublin’s Best Hostel’s) broke a Guinness World Record on Monday night 25th January at the HOSTELWORLD.COM 2010 Hoscars in the Button Factory Temple Bar Dublin.

There was a lot of excitement on the night as 29 backpackers’ crammed into one small bunk bed to break the record for
“Most amount of people in one Bunk Bed”

The bed supplied by Justin McCarthy from Sleeptite is usually reserved for just two backpackers’ proudly supported all 29 backpackers’.......we think we might have got more in but ran out of yellow t-shirtsheehee

Following the snow last week in Dublin, the city was thrown into chaos. With the buses off the road due to treacherous conditions and thousands of commuters struggling to make their way home only to find their water has been cut.
For those of you lucky enough to be staying in Isaacs Hostel you don’t need to worry as we have turned up the heating and opened our FREE Sauna for you to warm up in after a day of exploring the city in the snow, and the city does look beautiful with snow.
We even have a new special offer with beds a little as €9 including breakfast.
Isaacs Hostel and Jacobs Inn are located in the heart of the city 2 minutes from O’Connell Street and right beside the Bus and Train Station.

Dublin Airport has many delays so make sure you check your flight details in advance and allow yourself enough time to get to the airport.

New Year in Isaacs Hostel & Jacobs Inn

Come and celebrate the New Year with us.
We have our last few beds available to book.

We will kick start the celebrations with our last BBQ of the year in our heated garden at 6pm on New Year’s Eve, followed by some live music in Isaacs hostel with Curt Krause.

There is a lot happening around the city too here are a few suggestions for you….
If you want to party your way into 2010 then you couldn't be in a better place than Dublin. You'll find lots of traditional Irish bars, disco bars, and nightclubs which will all have their own countdown at midnight. You'll find an excellent selection in Temple Bar – Dublin's vibrant cultural quarter. If you're heading to a restaurant then book well in advance.
Why not ring in the New Year to the sound of the Christchurch Bells which will be heard ringing throughout the entire city at midnight. This is a big tradition in Dublin city centre where hundreds of people flock to Christchurch Cathedral to hear the tolling of these famous bells. The cathedral has a record number of 19 bells. If you're going to this event then get there early – wrap up warm, get a good spot and join in with the other travelers outside the cathedral.
Other New Year's events include the Lord Mayors New Years Day Parade. This fun and entertaining parade hosts some fantastic marching bands from home and abroad. The parade starts off on Parnell Street (just north of O’Connell St,), makes its way up through Dublin’s main thoroughfare O' Connell Street where all the acts stop and perform for Dublin’s Lord Mayor.
Another New Years Day activity to enjoy is ice-skating and this year again, Smithfield on ice (at Smithfield) and 7up on Ice (in the RDS).
All events are within walking distance of both hostels so why not stay in the heart of the city this New Year.

The northside's best hostel - hell, for atmosphere alone it's the best in town - is in a 200-year-old wine vault just around the corner from the main bus station. Friendly, secure and well stocked, it generates consistently good reviews from backpackers and other budget travellers.

We are presently putting up our Christmas Decorations to get us all in the festive mood.

If you are wondering what to do this Christmas why not come and join us for Christmas dinner.
Jacobs Inn will be open all over Christmas and New Year.
We have a special Christmas package for you with 3 nights Accommodation and 3 course Traditional Christmas Dinner from €50. (Christmas dinner €20)

Saturday night kick starts with live music in reception at 4pm by Serious Sam Barret (UK) he will later be joined by a number of other musicians taking part in The Red Line festival ………. live music, comedy and poetry are all lined up for your enjoyment.
At 5.30/6pm you will be brought on a Historical Walking Tour through the local area and finish up for with even more live music in your choice of the three bars.

“Madra” are playing live in Jacobs Inn tonight and it’s FREE for all guests staying in both Isaacs Hostel and Jacobs Inn.

Madra (the Irish word for Dog) are Dublin’s hottest three piece rock band with influences from Irish rock legends like Thin Lizzy to the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and the Foofighters you will not be able to resist this bands catchy songs and raw seductive live sound. October looks like it’s going to be a fun packed month which is just as well because the rain hasn’t stopped since October began.

So what have we to look forward to?

Good news following “Basic” amazing performance on Saturday night they have promised to return for two more dates in October.
16th October in Isaacs hostel and
17th October in Jacobs inn.

Entrance FREE to guests staying in both our hostels.

Basic’s will also be performing in the Academy on the 8th October.
There is a 5euro entrance fee which all goes for a good cause to support the Special Olympics. So do your bit and have a great night out at the same time.

Arthur Guinness after party

Everyone is in recovery after having a blast at the many Guinness parties around the city last Thursday. Jacobs inn celebrations took place from 5.30pm where we had FREE Guinness and live music.
At 5.59 everyone raised a toast to Arthur. We then had some Irish dancing and a dance off were the winners won 2 tickets to the Guinness store house. It was a lot of fun but more than a few sore heads around the hostel the next day. All in the name of fun and culture!
Tonight we have live music by Bex Marshall an exception musician with a powerfull voice and amazing guitar skills.
Come along to Jacobs Inn tonight at 7pm for a preformance not to be missed.

Apart from a bit of rain which can always be expected, it’s not a true Irish experience without a bit of rain.
The whole weekend was a muddy, rock n roll circus of pure fun and excitement.

Coldplay competition

There is a lot going on this week.
On Monday and Tuesday we had a very talented musician come in and show us how to play the bodhran a traditional Irish drum. Made from a round wooden frame, with an animal skin stretched over it, the bodhran (pronounced bow-rahn) is the heartbeat of Irish traditional music, and is hugely popular.
Also NEW this Tuesday was our photographic workshop where anyone interested in improving their holiday snaps learned a new new trick.
All FREE for anyone staying in Isaacs hostel and Jacobs inn.

Is it August in Dublin?
It is difficult to know what time of year it is here with the rain once more ensuring we grow and keeping our countryside nice and green.
However it is not for the weather that you come to Ireland.
The reason our pubs are so good is because our weather is so bad.
Many writers, musicians and artists have created and been inspired in many of the local bars and pubs, and there are lots to choose from.
When visiting Dublin you are sure to find a pub or bar that meets you preference.
No matter what night of the week you go out you are always guaranteed to meet some great people and have the craic (Irish for fun)

So what’s on this week.
The hostels as always have lots going on.

Tuesday: early morning jog through the city, just meet us in Jacobs inn reception.

Wednesday: BBQ in Isaacs hostel garden (and yes we have a canopy just encase:)

Thursday: Chillie and sol night kicks off at 6.30 in Jacobs Inn cafe. The cheapest place to eat in the city for only 5euro you get chillie, rice, tacos and a bottle of beer.

Friday: BBQ In Isaacs Garden, 5euro for a burger and beer. Great value and good craic too.

Saturday: BBQ in Isaacs at 7pm and FREE Irish dancing lesson in Jacobs at 3.30pm all welcome.

Sunday: time to brush up on those steps as we have our second night of FREE Irish dancing.

EVERYDAY: don’t for get every morning we have a FREE walking tour of the city leaving reception at 10.30am and every night we show movies on our large screen in both hostels 9pm (be sure to let us know if you have any special requests)

Exchange Dublin and Temple Bar Cultural Trust are calling on citizens, funders, public representatives, artists and more to join us on Meeting House Square, Temple Bar tomorrow evening at 6.30pm for ‘Culture and the City – The Debate’
All audience members, invited guests and crew will be required to wear a white upper face mask upon passing a screen at the entrance to Meeting House Square and all will remain anonymous throughout. This theatrical experiment aims to break down some of the barriers that exist to real discussion and debate, using anonymity to encourage people to give their truthful opinions.

Gates open at 6pm and Meeting House Square will be equipped with a marquee roof covering. Please note: This is a free event and no tickets are required – just come along! Masks will be provided as you enter the venue.
Temple Bar Cultural Trust (TBCT) and Lord Mayor Cllr Emer Costello today (Tuesday 18th August) unveiled an immense programme for Culture Night 2009 at the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks, which takes place on Friday 25th September. TBCT expect half a million visitors to attend Culture Night across the 11 participating towns, cities and counties.

Renowned for its free mix of events, street activity and ‘All Sorts’ of talent, Culture Night 2009 will transform the participating areas of – Dublin, Cork, Galway, Letterkenny, Limerick, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, Tralee, Waterford, Wexford - into an accessible cultural wonderland offering people of all ages the chance to experience culture in various and unusual forms including visual art, architecture, dancing, family fun, music, poetry, street performance, painting, talks, theatre and traditional forms of culture. Culture Night will also take place in the Cathedral Quarter of Belfast this year on Friday September 25th.

The Culture Night National initiative is co-ordinated by Temple Bar Cultural Trust and supported by the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism in partnership with the regional arts offices and local authorities.

13th July 2009
This year marks the centenary of the birth of Irish figurative artist Francis Bacon who was born in Dublin in, no prizes for guessing, 1909! His work was known for it's bold, austere and often violent imagery. The Hugh Lane Gallery in nearby Parnell Square (a 5 minute stroll from the hostels) houses the studio where Bacon worked in South Kensington, London.

After his death, John Edwards, close friend and confident, donated the contents of the studio to the gallery. Over 7,000 items were carefully catalogued, moved and repositioned in the gallery studio. With speculation that Bacon had been locked in a cupboard as a child the small studio was a place where he felt comfortable. He once explained that 'chaos suggests images to me'.

The Hugh Lane also has a wonderful exhibition of over 2,000 artworks from Impressionist to contemporary pieces. With a great cafe and gift shop it's perfect for whiling away a few hours if you should have a damp day on your visit to Dublin!

Europe's No. 1 Rock 'N' Roll Festival

Pack up your tent, hop on a bus and make your way to Oxegen at Punchestown Racecourse in Naas. One of the biggest music festivals on the calender takes place next weekend from 10th to 12th July. You can pitch your tent from Thursday 9th until Monday 13th. Blur will headline along with a fantastic lineup of groups and performers including Snow Patrol, Lily Allen, Katy Perry, Pet Shop Boys and The Killers to name but a few. Walking is the best way to explore any city and when you stay at Isaacs Hostel or Jacobs Inn you're perfectly positioned to see all the best Dublin has to offer. You can even take a guided 3 hour walking tour right from the front door of your hostel every day.

To set off on your own walking tour just arm yourself with a good map, a raincoat and a pair of sunglasses (to cover every eventuality!). Dublin is a compact city ideal for covering on foot.

Around the corner from the hostel is the new boardwalk which runs along the river Liffey. You can stroll towards O'Connell Street for a perfect view of the Spire. After visiting the G.P.O. (General Post Office) site of the 1916 Rising you can turn left onto Henry Street home of great shopping. Pop into Wolfe Tone Square to see the Oxfam exhibition.(http://www.oxfam.ie/) Then head over the hal'penny bridge to Temple Bar, centre of Dublin's night life with restaurants, pubs and nightclubs for everyone.

Ireland's 1st National Bike Week starts today and runs till 21st June 2009 (http://www.bikeweek.ie/). Cycling is a wonderful way to see Dublin city and to travel all over the country. Whether you want to explore the Capital's main tourist spots or enjoy quiet trips on country lanes Ireland has tonnes to offer the amateur or avid cyclist. As part of the week on Wednesday evening there is a Dublin City cycle which starts at Merrion Square at 7.00pm.The route will travel across the River Liffey, up O'Connell Street to Parnell Square and back to Merrion Square again.You can also take advantage of the free bike checkups on offer.

'Me stomach thinks me throat's been cut' is just one of the entertaining ways an Irish person can let you know they're ready to eat! Good hearty fare can be as simple as a burger and beer enjoyed right here in the hostel every Friday and Saturday evening or try your hand at preparing a full Irish breakfast in our self catering kitchen.

On your visit to Dublin the more adventurous visitor will want to sample some of our more traditional dishes including coddle, Irish stew, colcannon and corned beef and cabbage which can all be found in the great selection of restaurants around the city. Blooming Marvellous!

Dublin's Phoenix Park is 1752 acres of beautiful unspoiled woodland locatedonly 2 kms from O'Connell Street in the city centre. In fact the PhoenixPark is the largest city enclosed park in Europe and is home to the zoological gardens which opened here in 1830.It's well worth a visit with fantastic walking, running, cycling and rollerblading paths. You'll probably see a herd of fallow deer wandering around in the wooded areas. The residence of Ireland's President Mary McAleese (Arasan Uachtarain) is located in the park as is the US Ambassador's residenceand a state of the art visitors centre with activites throughout the year.

This weekend sees the now annual Bloom festival taking place in the park running from 28th May to 1st June. With over 50,000 visitors last year the festival will feature the best of Irish plants and flowers and gardens designed especially for the occasion.

Access to the park from Jacobs Inn or Isaacs hostel couldn't be easier. Just hop on the Red Luas Line around the corner at Connelly Station. This weekend because the Bloom festival is on you can pick up free shuttle buses at Heuston Station which will take you to the centre of the action. Bring along a picnic and make the most of the wide open spaces.

Both Isaacs Hostel and Jacobs Inn are located right beside the Central Bus Station, Connolly train (DART) station, Connolly tram (LUAS) station and the Aiport Express 747 bus stop. HOSTEL EVENTS THIS WEEK......09 February 2009

Just in case you are coming to Dublin this week this is what we have on at our hostels! You won't find a better place to stay at the best prices.

On Tuesday & Thursday night we will be having a fun 2 hour dance class for guests for free. Our professional spanish teacher will be teaching and performing a mixture of styles in Jacobs Inn on Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm. So get your dancing shoes on and come and join in!
On Friday, because you need the extra time to get ready for going out, we take care of food for you! At 6pm in Jacobs, or 5:30 in Isaacs we will be preparing some great food to sell at the cheapest prices so you don't have to cook your dinner on Friday. Fresh pasta, pizza and salad all for only €5.
On Saturday the famous 'Irish Dance Party' group will be coming in and doing a show for guests. This great 2 hour show includes live Irish music, performances from a professional Irish dancer, and time for you to join in too and learn some traditional dances for yourself. Halloween Party

So Halloween has just come and gone, and it was celebrated in style in our Hostels here. We threw a Halloween Party in Jacobs Inn for the guests of both there and Isaacs Hostel, and it was great fun! We had games and prizes to be won. For any who did not come in costume, we had a table set up with bin nags, rolls of toilet paper and other items so guests could make their own costume. We also had live music from Italian outfit 'The Criminal Jokers' who played a great set for over an hour to a packed crowd. It was great!

So now that Halloween is over, we look forward to Christmas i guess, although it does still seem too far away for now. First however is the US election, which is being voted for 2moro. Lets see how that one pans out.........

So it has been a while since I last dropped in to say hello now but we have just been too busy in the hostels here. Another great summer has come and gone in Dublin and we are now gearing up for the colder winter months again. This means that despite having a wealth of attractions and activities around Dublin, we are also making an extra effort to ensure our guests can be entertained without having to brave the weather outside!

Our BBQ is resilient and continues to draw the crowds with its tempting hook of a (now famously big) Isaacs burger and a beer for €5. We have also been providing free music performances in the hostels, for free, for all the guests. Two weeks ago we even had a 25 piece group from Holland playing in Jacobs as the drinks flowed and everyone got up dancing. Check out our facebook site to see some videos!

So between these, our free nightly movie sessions, free snooker tournaments, free walking tours, and much more we are making sure that our guests don’t feel the chill of the weather, unless they want to!

And now its the USA's turn. For the rest of the world it brings to mind hot dogs, flags, beer, american football and all sorts of good stuff! So happy 4th July y'all.

We get lots of Americans staying in the hostel, they certainly enjoy the Dublin hospitality with a special fondness for the Guinness factory and our law of being allowed drink at 18! Plenty of patriotic americans were out today, showing off their stars and stripes.

We even have our very own american working here at reception. The very handsome but quiet and diminutive (!!??!!!) Matt from Manhatten who also moonlights as a famous choral singer. See come to Isaacs and get a famous american checking you in!

Oh Canada

We're still recovering here in Dublin from Gay Pride last weekend and have reluctantly taken down my homemade decorations (made during a quiet late shift with coloured post it notes, I had no green though, as pointed out by a observant hosteller, but hey it was a spur of the moment thing and I'm sure the green people of the world will understand!).

Anyway the good thing about working in an international environment is that there is no end of holidays. This week its Canada's turn. We get loads of Canadians staying in the hostel, especially lots from Quebec, who I always find very glamourous with their Canadian passports and their Quebecois! Anyway to celebrate Canada Day, here are five fun facts about Canada gleamed from our canadian hostellers:

Canadians are not americans (nothing annoys them more allegedly!!)
Its the second largest country in the world.
The official winter sport is ice hockey.
Canada makes 80% of the worlds supply of maple syrup
Degrassi Junior High is a real place (I made that up, but I worked as a waitress with a guy who was a regular on the show, so had to get it in somewhere!! Anyone under 25 reading this will have no idea what I am talking about!! Sorry!)

I went to Canada once, I really like it. Niagra Falls Rocks!

A crawling week

In the interests of research I decided to take one of the tours advertised in the hostel reception. After much himming and hawwing, between the celtic experience tour of newgrange to see the neolithic tombs to the wild wicklow tour to get in the set of Ballykissangel, I opted for the backpacker pub crawl! Purely in the interest of research of course (oh i said that already, maybe the more I say it, the more believable it will become!)

So I headed to Major Tom's to hook up with the tour which already had hit several pubs and were a bit ahead of me in the drinking stakes, but a free shot sorted that out pretty quickly! Then the gang took to the dance floor which resulted in serious cheesy dancing. It was a mixed group, a good few typical backpackers and then a couple of older gangsters!

Then it was on to the Porterhouse for more shots and more bad dancing to the live band. The pub crawl resulted in two couples who didn't know each other before.... I'm sure that wasn't included in the 9 euro! Nice one!!

Anyway work the next morning was a bit of a trial.... shots are bad for you folks!!

Also the Dublin LGBTQ Pride Festival 2007 culminating with the pride parade on the 23rd June. Now that will be a day out and a half!!

Run run run!

Today is june bank holiday monday, which means it women's mini marathon day. 10km of women (and the odd man in a dress)will be lining up in a mad dash to get around the city. I of course have my running shoes on ready and waiting! Well in my mind at least! We had some guest from England who were here to run in it! They went off bright and early all tooled up for a big fry up, they walked the 10km, stopping for two pints on the way around and then celebrating their record breaking time of 2 and half hours will a few more beers. Needless to say they arrived back in the hostel in interesting shape!

The sunny weather in the last week lead lots of people to take tours which we book for them at reception. Glendalough and Wicklow being particularily popular. Glendalough is one of my personal favourites, perfect on a lovely sunny day like today.

Long distance lovers

This week has been the Dave Matthews Band week. Supposedly the band were playing only 4 gigs in europe this tour so people came from miles around to hear them. We had people from Norway, Israel and all over! They must be a good band live to come so far!!

The bread and jam is still going down well, this week kindly supplemented by a German group who had bought far too many yogurts, so when they were leaving, everyone else benefitted.

The wireless has resulted in lots of people sitting around reception with headphones, surfing for hours! They're not going to make friends like that! I think I will have to impose a limit... 20 minutes surfing, 20 minutes chatting... or something ;-)

The sunny weather is back... off to the beach I think :)

Brown bread and jam

We've changed the breakfasts at Isaacs. It used to be tea/coffee and a muffin, now its irish brown bread and jam. Yummo. The downside of this is that I have eaten enough bread and jam to feed a small country in the last week! Oh well its healthy so I'll survive!

And thats not the only exciting news in the hostel. The reception has been transformed in to a veritable space ship and we now have joined the 21st century and have gone wireless and best thing is its free for people staying here!! Yay! But who knew there were some many flashpackers staying here! Cute little macbooks have materialised from no where, where were these hiding in the days before wireless?

Good news the sun has returned! Good job...that rain was ruining my 'do'!

Socially Innovative!

Last week was the week of the Young Social Innovators. This resulted is lots of socially responsible youngsters staying with us!! Seems like a great programme... they had nothing as fancy as that in my day!

The other day I was reminded of how full service Isaacs and our sister hostel Jacobs are. I got a call on reception from a guest staying in the adjacent hotel which went something like this:

Guest: Hello, is that the hostel?
Issie: Yes it is!
Guest: I'm staying in the hotel for the weekend and I sprained my ankle and I was wondering whether you had any crutches.
Issie: Eh... this is the hostel...as is hostel
Guest: Yeah, so do you have any crutches?
Issie: Hostel.... not hospital?!??!
Guest: Yes I know, the hostel.

Very confused by the guest's determination that it was normal to assume that a hostel would have crutches, I wondered whether I had missed a section in the staff handbook on our medical supplies closet so I put her on hold and asked a manager. And would you believe it, we did have a pair of crutches in Jacobs. Now I know Jacobs is the fancier big sister of Isaacs, but I was very impressed that they had crutches in a cupboard somewhere just in case. Now that's service for you! Anyway the guest was happy and sent one of her mates to collect them!

The weather has turned a bit this week with a few heavy rain showers :( I knew the tropical weather couldn't last. Ah well hopefully it will turn back around again. I will keep you posted!

Orange Craze!

Dutch hostellers gave us great entertainment this week.

It started early in the week when Guido from the Netherlands checked in with me. He was carrying a guitar so I asked him would he do a gig for us that night. He agreed and in return got a discount on his stay. We're all in favour of musicians in the hostel and frequently have guests playing in the evenings. It can be a bit of a risk sometimes... you can imagine, people saying they are musicians and ending up performing with some spoons and out of tune singing.... no better way to clear a hostel, than with a performance like that!

Thankfully Guido was brilliant and serenaded us for nearly two hours with all the classics. He even got a bit of a sing song going. It certainly made the end of my shift pass very quickly! We liked him so much we asked him to play again the next night, so everyone was happy :)

Monday was Queensday in the Netherlands. From what I gleamed from the orange covered dutch guests, its something of a national holiday in Holland, celebrating funnily enough the Queens birthday. Just an excuse to wear orange and party by the looks of things but correct me if I'm wrong!

Sun is still shining like a mad thing. Those in the know say it will rain a little tomorrow (good to keep the grass green) but then the sun will be back. Time to hit the beach I think!

An upside down week!

The last week has been somewhat Antipodean themed in the hostel. There is never a lack of aussie and kiwi guests in backpackers hostels but this week was even more so than usual.

It started last Wednesday with Anzac Day. Anzac Day for the uninitiated is celebrated by Australia and New Zealand on the 25th April every year. It commemorates the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC.. get it?!) who landed at Gallipoli in Turkey for the Battle of Gallipoli, over 10,000 of whom were killed. I was impressed to see that quite a few guests got the early wake up call to head to the dawn service in Grangegorman Cemetery for 6.30am... that's dedication to the cause! This was then followed by the traditional 'gunfire breakfast'... where they got the rum to put in their coffee at that hour we'll never know, it certainly isn't included in our light breakfast! Perhaps they were cub scouts when they were young... very prepared! Later in the day (hopefully after a restorative nap!) they headed to the Dublin aussie/kiwi institutions of The Woolshed and Down Under for a few games of two-up. Now I think you have to be from Oz or New Zealand to understand that game. Back in my Sydney backpacker glory days I spent a drunken day losing my rent money playing that game... the reason I lost.. cos I didn't have a clue what I was doing! Cheap beer and not knowing how to play, do not a successful gambling day out make! Anyway I don't think our guests won too big, but they certainly seemed to have had fun, judging by the prevalence of sun glasses and painkillers the next morning!

Then of course there was Australia's triumph in the Cricket World Cup over the weekend. That resulted in plenty of smiling but tired aussie faces on Sunday morning! Of course here in Ireland, we feel that we all but won the world cup ourselves, having had somewhat of a 'cool runnings' moment in the competition, coming from nowhere to qualifying for the super eight round!

In other news the sun hasn't stopped shining in Dublin all week which has resulted in a shorts and flip-flops uniform among the guest! The temperatures have hit 18-20 degrees most days, not bad for April in Dublin!
